CHARQUIPUNK

Charquipunk, or Sebastian Navarro, is from Concón. His pseudonym comes from the words “charqui” [traditional word for the region of the Andes] and “punk” [symbolizing rebellion against modern civilization and the establishment]. He is inspired by nature: especially birds. His house is full of books on the subject and he has spent years studying them, especially the native birds of Chile. He’s painted herons and swallows, but his favorite is the hummingbird. “For me it’s an amazing bird - it’s so small and yet it moves so fast.” There is a kind of hummingbird that lives only in Juan Fernandez, and for him to paint it outside the continent is like taking a little of the country to other places.
The traditions and history of Latin America, which are a recurring theme in his murals, are also very important to him. “I see graffiti and muralism as a means of social communication that makes available to all, stories and themes that may have long been hidden or lost, which today are strongly linked to the theme of Latin American carnival and the indigenous fiesta.

It is in graffiti where I find a discipline that does not discriminate against the public that observes it, since it is installed in the city putting everyone in front of it on equal terms: from children to old people without discrimination of social class or studies, account.” In that sense, his trips to the continent have been very useful to absorb Latin American culture and to be able to translate it better and better.
He regularly goes to Buenos Aires, but you can find him in many parts of the world: in Valencia, Spain [where he went to the Polinizia Festival], in Brazil [Sao Paulo and Macao visiting the Kolirius Graffiti festival], Lima [For the Skandaloss festival], Denmark [Roskilde Festival], Cochabamba [Bolivia], the Rio de Janeiro football field, and many other places.

In Chile also has shaped its birds from north to south: Valparaiso, Concón, Santiago, Viña, Laguna Verde, etc. He painted at the festival “Hecho en Casa”, and now will star alongside other well-known Latin American artists the French documentary “Street Art Revolution”.
