Valparaíso, affectionately nick-named Valpo, was once the main South American seaport for international trade. It experienced an incredible period of economic and cultural growth during the California gold rush that resulted in mass immigration to the small hillside city. The city was known by international sailors as Little San Francisco and The Jewel of the Pacific.

The immigrant communities left a unique imprint on the city’s noteworthy architecture. Each community built its own churches and schools, while many also founded other noteworthy cultural and economic institutions. The largest immigrant communities came from Britain, Germany, and Italy, each developing their own hillside neighbourhood, preserved today as National Historic Districts or Zonas Típicas. Despite its small size it has acquired a comparatively cosmopolitan character.

Valparaíso is covered in many different styles of graffiti, from quick one color tags to large scale, expertly detailed pieces. All the street art throughout the city has its place, and its place is right here.

Many artists from all over the world have made their home in the little port city of Valpo. The bohemian vibes and quirky architecture are a haven for creative types, and quite a few of them have made a name for themselves as street artists. They have work all over the city and are often commissioned to create pieces for homeowners, business owners, and city officials.
